INTRODUCING: antiparent book club!

Today, August 11th, 2026, is the one year anniversary of antiparent.com. I'm so excited to present an expansion to the site, antiparent book club. It's a collection of chapter notes, reading guides, and discussion questions, all designed to increase accessibility to the books I've found so impactful to my understanding of youth liberation.

This has been a huge journey. I've been working on antiparent on and off for 5 years now, since my first pregnancy. It started off as a promise to my unborn child to treat them better than my parents treated me. That promise inspired me to start reading a lot about gentle parenting and child development, then about the history of childhood and intersecting structures of oppression, then about family abolition and social reproduction theory...

Finally, after leaving my job at NASA last year, I threw myself into writing about it all. I'm so glad I did. It's been so rewarding to pull together all of these threads and weave a (somewhat) cohesive, historically informed approach to youth liberation. It's been nothing short of amazing to build a community, online and offline, of thousands of like-minded kids, teens, and adults.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for reading what I have to say. Thank you for being in conversation with me & suggesting other sources to explore. Thank you for asking so many great questions all the time and encouraging me (and others!) to look at so many aspects of ordinary life in a new light.

I hope this new resource helps make the theory and history I discuss on here more accessible to everyone, but especially to kids and teenagers. I'm starting off with notes on just one book: Family Abolition: Capitalism and the Communizing of Care by M.E. O'Brien. The goal is to add many, many more over time.

In the immortal words of Mary Peña and Barbara Carey in the June 1979 issue of Off Our Backs (and as cited in "m/other ourselves" by Alexis Pauline Gumbs):

THEY WILL NOT BELONG TO THE PATRIARCHY
THEY WILL NOT BELONG TO US EITHER
THEY WILL BELONG ONLY TO THEMSELVES.
